Lithium Coin or Button Cells (sizes, estimate duration, main use)

watch battery or button cell is a small single cell battery shaped as a squat cylinder typically 5 to 25 mm in diameter and 1 to 6 mm high—like a button on a garment, hence the name. A metal can form the bottom body and positive terminal of the cell. An insulated top cap is a negative terminal.

Button cells are used to power small portable electronic devices such as wrist watches, pocket calculators, artificial cardiac pacemakers, implantable cardiac defibrillators, automobile keyless entry transmitters, and hearing aids. Wider variants are usually called coin cells. Devices using button cells are usually designed around a cell giving a long service life, typically well over a year in continuous use in a wristwatch. Most button cells have low self-discharge and hold their charge for a long time if not used. Higher-power devices such as hearing aids, where high capacity is important and low self-discharge less so as the cell will usually be used up before it has time to discharge, may use zinc-air cells which have a much higher capacity for a given size but dry out over a few weeks even if not used.

Button cells are single cells, usually disposable primary cells. Common anode materials are zinc or lithium. Common cathode materials are manganese dioxide, silver oxide, carbon monofluoride, cupric oxide or oxygen from the air. Mercuric Oxide button cells were formerly common, but are no longer available due to the toxicity and environmental effect of mercury.

Cells of different chemical composition made in the same size are mechanically interchangeable. However, the composition can affect service life and voltage stability. Using the wrong cell may lead to short life or improper operation (for example, light metering on a camera requires a stable voltage, and silver cells are usually specified). Sometimes different cells of the same type and size and specified capacity in milliampere-hours (mAh) are optimized for different loads by using different electrolytes, so that one may have longer service life than the other if supplying a relatively high current.

Button cells are very dangerous for small children. Button cells that are swallowed can cause severe internal burns and significant injury or death.

Silver Oxide Batteries (specifications & common use)

In a silver oxide battery, silver oxide is used as the cathode and zinc as the anode. An alkaline electrolyte, usually sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, is included in the chemistry, as well. Chemical reactions inside the battery reduce the silver content from Ag(I) to AG, and oxidize the zinc from Zn to Zn(II). Spent silver oxide batteries are sometimes recycled for their precious metals (silver), but the quantity of silver present in most batteries of this type is so small that this is generally impractical.

In comparison to other batteries, silver oxide batteries have flatter discharge curves than standard alkalines, as well as higher open circuit potential than mercury batteries. Prior to the development of lithium-ion technology, silver oxide batteries had the highest energy density of any battery chemistry. Still, silver oxide batteries provide up to 40 percent greater run time than lithium-ion batteries. Silver oxides’ water-based chemistry also prevents thermal runaway and flammability, potential problems that lithium-ions have been known to experience.

  • Cell Voltage: The open circuit voltage of the silver cell is 1.6 V. Typical median operating voltage is 1.5 to 1.2 V.
  • Capacity: 14 mAh to 180 mAh.
  • Energy by Weight: 60 Wh/lb. (130 Wh/kg)
  • Energy by Volume: 8.2 Wh/cubic inch (500 Wh/l)
  • Discharge Characteristics : (recommended drain 620W to 39W )
  • Shelf Life: Charge retention is over 84% after two years of storage at 70°F (21°C)
  • Temperature Range: -20° C to +60° C
  • Sizes: The silver cell is manufactured in button cell configurations.
  • Applications: Hearing aids, watches, photographic equipment and special electronics requiring small, high capacity batteries

Insurance / Medicare / Medicaid

Effective July 1st, 2018, Cochlear Americas is no longer selling disposable batteries.    Our company has partnered with Cochlear Americas to supply disposable batteries to Cochlear recipients.

Due to these changes, recipients covered under Medicare, will need to purchase batteries on their own and submit a completed form to Medicare for reimbursement.

Our company will also assist in placing orders for Kanso or Baha customers covered under Medicaid.  Based on eligibility and the state your reside in, these batteries may be available at no charge to qualifying customers.

Customers with private insurance may also purchase batteries, but will need to submit a claim to your insurance provider directly.   All other recipients who purchase disposable batteries out of pocket are welcome to purchase from our company.

What are silver oxide batteries used for?

Potassium hydroxide batteries are used primarily in LCD watches with backlights, and sodium hydroxide batteries are used primarily in digital watches. Using potassium hydroxide as the electrolyte allows silver oxide batteries to operate even under heavy draining conditions and also at lower temperatures.

What is the shelf-life of silver oxide batteries?

Silver oxide batteries become hazardous on the onset of leakage; this generally takes 5 years from the time they are put into use (which coincides with their normalshelf life). Until recently, all silver oxide batteries contained up to 0.2% mercury.

Do silver oxide batteries expire?

The Expiry date (ED) is printed on the packaging of Silver Oxide Battery. The Expiry Date on Silver Oxide Battery means the expiration of the recommended use period. The Expiry Date is determined after three (3) years from the manufactured year and month.

Do batteries go bad if not used?

Since primary batteries can't be recharged, any self-discharge is permanent. Most disposable batteries have an expiration date printed on the packaging. But if the unused battery is not connected to anything, it will probably be fine after four yearsif it is fully discharged and then recharged after storage.
